How to Drive a Golf Ball

One of the most important skills in golf is the driving of the ball. Distance is crucial, yet it is ineffective to place too much strength behind the shot. Instead of giving the ball more distance, an excess of force can cause the ball to curve off path.

Instead of rushing into the drive, the golfer should prepare carefully by placing the inside of the lead foot in line with the ball. The ball should be a bit farther away from the body as compared to other shots, as the goal is to allow the driver to come in contact with the ball on the upswing.

The backswing should be deliberate but long. The shoulders turn and weight transfers to the front foot as the hips rotate toward the target. The club then naturally scoops the ball off of the tee without a lifting motion from the golfer.

The executive vice president of Total Quality Engineering in Farmington Hills, Michigan, Philip Calhoun builds upon nearly two decades of experience in manufacturing operations with corporations like Frito Lay/Pepsico and the Ford Motor Company. Outside of the professional arena, Philip Calhoun has coached Team Powerstroke to three national championships on the American Youth Basketball Tour (AYBT).

A youth athletic organization, the AYBT supports more than a thousand boys and girls basketball teams across the nation. It ensures that all members of these teams get the chance to improve through its 60/40 philosophy, which dictates that each healthy and eligible player on each team roster will play in each game, occupying the court for between 40 and 60 percent of the total playing time.

AYBT developed this philosophy with the understanding that players can’t get better if they don’t play. In addition to allowing players to improve their personal skills, the philosophy gives player the opportunity to learn and participate in complicated team dynamics. To meet the 60/40 goal, all AYBT coaches must rotate players accordingly.

Study Abroad in Italy Through Golden Key

A veteran engineer, Philip Calhoun holds a leadership position with Michigan-based Total Quality Engineering. A former Division I wrestler at the University of Michigan, Philip Calhoun earned membership in the Golden Key International Honour Society as a student.

The largest collegiate honor society in the world, Golden Key’s more than 2 million members include luminaries such as Bill Clinton and Elie Wiesel. The distinguished organization serves its members in a variety of ways, including offering employment resources, scholarships and research grants, and graduate school information.

Golden Key also maintains several study-abroad programs for members interested in studying and living in foreign countries. One of these is a unique partnership with the Sant’Anna Institute in Sorrento, Italy. Members of Golden Key receive extra benefits as study-abroad students at the Sant’Anna Institute, including internship possibilities in Italy, excursion opportunities, and discounted fees. Golden Key members can choose between a semester-long program or a shorter summer program, with fees covering tuition, accommodation, orientation, on-site advising, and excursions.

State of Kuwait Assists UNICEF in Helping Displaced Children

Philip Calhoun is the executive vice president of Total Quality Engineering, where he develops and promotes company values on safety, quality, and proper overall delivery. Outside of work, Philip Calhoun is involved in donating to UNICEF.

UNICEF was formed in 1946 through the United Nations. Since that time the organization has assisted in 190 different countries. Its mission is to campaign for the rights of children in all countries, while providing them with basic necessities like food and water in situations of war or poverty. The organization is supported through fundraising involving a number of initiatives, including the popular Trick or Treat for UNICEF which takes place in the US, Canada, Mexico, and Ireland.

In December of 2016, UNICEF announced it appreciated the help that Kuwait had supplied to it in the form of $4 million to help Syrian refugees living in Iraq. Many of the children have missed out on education, and are in need of basic necessities, such as clean water, food, and sanitary living conditions. Through the donations provided to UNICEF, the organization is working to help them regain their lives and recover from their forced relocation as a result of the war.

Golden Key Names New Board Chair

Philip Calhoun currently serves as an executive vice president with the auto manufacturing consulting firm Total Quality Engineering in Farmington Hills, Michigan. During his academic career, Philip Calhoun was a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society.

The Golden Key International Honor Society recently announced its appointment of Adnan Bokhari to the position of board chair. Bokhari currently serves as chief financial officer and chief operating officer of the Corporation for Enterprise Development (CFED) and has served with Golden Key in various capacities since 2012. In his current role at CFED, Bokhari helps the nonprofit group navigate through various government programs to help individuals in financial areas such as building savings and owning a home.

Golden Key’s board is tasked with the responsibility of overseeing the society’s business affairs as well as the organization’s internal governance. Members are chosen from various walks of professional life in both the profit and nonprofit fields.

Michigan Chronicle Magazine - Men of Excellence Award

 

As the executive vice president of Total Quality Engineering, Philip Calhoun oversees the principles and standards of operation that shape the company. Philip Calhoun worked in the field of engineering management for more than 15 years with the Ford Motor Company. In 2012, Philip Calhoun was presented with the Men of Excellence award by Michigan Chronicle Magazine. He also was given the JD Power Platinum Award in 2007 honoring his work as plant manager at the Lincoln Town car assembly facility.

The Men of Excellence award, presented by Michigan Chronicle magazine, celebrates leaders from Detroit who have made a significant impact in their field. Philip Calhoun was recognized for being a “lean manufacturing” expert, operating the Ford Motor Company’s Dearborn Engine & Fuel Tank Plant along with its Woodhaven Forging Plant in an innovative and cost efficient manner.

The Michigan Chronicle has recognized more than 800 honorees for the Men of Excellence and Women of Excellence awards since they began in 2008.
